What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient 3,000-year old technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM). It can safely
and effectively treat a wide range of health conditions. It is becoming more and more popular by the
day as it is a natural, safe and effective approach to conventional method. Acupuncture improves the
body’s functions and promotes natural self-healing process by stimulating specific acupoints. It is
broadly used to relieve pain. The most common TCM modality used to stimulate acupoints is the
insertion of fine, hair-thin, disposable, sterile needles into the skin. Electrical stimulation, pressure or heat may
further enhance the effects. Manual massage, acupressure, moxibustion (heat therapy), cupping, and
the application of topical herbal medicines are other acupoints techniques that can used in conjunction
to significantly improve the healing process.
TCM is based on ancient philosophy of the yin and yang, the two opposing forces which is the Universe and the Body. When these forces are in balance and harmony, the body is healthy. The vital energy called “Qi” (Chee) flows along the meridians (specific pathways) throughout the body. This constant flow of energy keeps the yin and yang forces balanced. However, if the flow of the energy gets blocked like water cannot passed through a dirty, clogged-up filter. The disruption can lead to pain, illness and lack of function. Acupuncture therapy can release the blocked Qi in the body and stimulate function, activate the body’s self-healing response.
Modern research has demonstrated positive effects of the body’s systems with acupuncture such as nervous, endocrine and immune systems, digestive system and cardiovascular system. By stimulating the body’s various systems, acupuncture therapy can significantly resolve pain, improve sleep, digestive function and a deep sense of well-being.
